The Journey of The Journey

Having begun as a new church in 1995, The Journey (originally called Covenant Community Church) has worshipped in a number of unique locations.  The church's first home was in the NorthRock movie theaters.  Services were held in one theater, children's programming in another and the nursery was in the lobby.

The next stop for the church was the East Branch of the YMCA where one of the gyms was set up for worship.  Although this location had many advantages, there were also certain challenges, such as the joggers who would start making loops overhead when services ran long.

The first 7-day-a-week location for the church was in a storefront in the Rockford Square shopping center on south Rock Road.  In this location, the church body enjoyed a respite from the challenges of setting up and tearing down the worship center each week.

After a few years in that location, it was time to pitch our tent in a new location once again.  Minneha Elementary School became the new location for weekly services, and the congregation adopted a new identity and name: The Journey.

In 2006, the congregation was again able to secure full time space by moving to its current location at 9999 E. Harry, the former site of Sunnyside Nursery.  After beginning under a leasing arrangement, the congregation later purchased the 10 acre property.  While conversion of the existing building provided for the immediate needs of the congregation, the time has come for expansion.

Beginning in early 2009, The Journey will embark on its first buildling project.  The project includes 5,000 square feet of new worship space, offices and space for a new kitchen.  In keeping with the philosopy of the congregation, the new space is intended to be multipurpose and functional as an outpost for numerous different ministry opportunities.  Below are pictures comparing current and future views of the outside of the building.
